PE and PP producers seek new opportunities in packaging

Expanding global polymer capacity is intensifying competition for buyers. At CREON’s Packaging conference, participants linked Russian producers’ prospects to the domestic market and the development of specialty resin grades.

According to Kommersant’s report of 21 October, the discussion took place the previous day. Implementa estimates that Russia’s polyolefin production capacity could rise from around 6 million tonnes in 2025 to more than 13 million tonnes by 2030. This is a forecast, not capacity already brought into operation.

The report also gives consumption figures for 2020–2025: polyethylene use in Russia rose by 28 %, while polypropylene use increased by 32 %. Analysts see further growth coming from a broader product range and specific market niches, as producers already supply most mainstream grades.

What to consider when choosing resin

Our editorial team recommends that film and bag producers discuss resin properties with their supplier in relation to the intended product. Before evaluating a new grade, agree on strength, thickness and processing requirements, then test it in a trial batch.

Capacity growth alone does not establish that purchasing prices will fall or guarantee that a particular grade will be available in a given region.
