PET Blow Molding Line: Technology Overview and Main Production Stages
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the most popular plastic materials, widely used to make packaging, especially bottles and containers for beverages, food and household chemicals. A PET blow molding line is a key technological link in the process of making plastic products from PET raw material by blow molding.
In this article we look at what a PET blow molding line is, how the process works and which stages it includes.
What is a PET blow molding line?
A PET blow molding line is a set of equipment for producing hollow PET products (most often bottles) by blowing a molten or pre-formed blank. The blank (preform) is made on extrusion or injection molding equipment. It is then heated to a temperature at which the plastic becomes elastic and is placed in a mold.
Main stages of the process.
- Preform preparation.
Usually the line is fed ready-made PET preforms — small cylindrical blanks resembling a stopper in shape. In some cases the line may include an extrusion section to produce preforms on site. - Preform heating.
The preform is placed in infrared heaters, where it is evenly heated to 90–120 °C, suitable for blowing. - Blowing and forming.
The blank is placed in a metal mold of the required geometry. Water or high-pressure air is fed inside the preform, causing the plastic to expand and take the shape of the cavity. The process can be single-stage (the preform is made and blown immediately) or two-stage (the first stage is making preforms, the second is blowing). - Cooling.
After blowing, the mold is cooled so that the PET hardens and the product keeps its shape. - Ejection and quality control.
Finished bottles or other products are removed from the mold and undergo visual and technical inspection for defects.
Advantages and features of the technology.
- High output — the line can produce thousands of products per hour.
- High product quality — PET products are distinguished by transparency, strength and chemical resistance.
- Production flexibility — the shape and volume of products can be changed, adapting to different tasks.
Areas of application.
PET blow molding lines are used:
- In the food industry (water, juices, dairy products).
- In the production of household chemicals and cosmetics.
- For packaging pharmaceutical and medical products.
A PET blow molding line is an important element of modern plastic packaging production. Thanks to its high speed, the quality of the products and the variety of shapes, the technology continues to develop and remains in demand on the market.
Knowing how the line works will help companies optimize production and meet the growing demand for eco-friendly and convenient packaging.
