Size reduction equipment: crusher and shredder.
21 Mar 2025
Size reduction of various materials (not only plastic) is usually carried out with two kinds of equipment: crushers and shredders. Each device has its own features, but in recent years recyclers increasingly prefer shredders thanks to advantages such as:
⦁ Longer operation without operator intervention: Shredders, especially multi-shaft designs, are less prone to jamming and blockage by foreign objects or hard-to-shred materials. This reduces the need for frequent stops for cleaning and maintenance, increasing uptime.
⦁ Versatility: Shredders can effectively shred a wide range of materials — from plastic and rubber to wood, paper and even some types of metal. This makes them an ideal solution for enterprises that recycle various types of waste.
⦁ Durability: The robust construction of shredders, including the use of high-quality steels for the cutting elements and the housing, ensures a long service life and wear resistance.
Shredders differ in the following parameters:
⦁ Number of rotors: Single-, two- and four-shaft models. The choice of the number of rotors depends on the type of material being shredded and the required degree of size reduction. Single-shaft shredders are suitable for primary shredding of large items, two-shaft ones for finer shredding, and four-shaft ones provide high throughput and a uniform particle size.
⦁ Presence of an upper ram (pre-press): This option is especially useful when processing materials with low bulk density, such as film, fibers or hollow products. The ram ensures a constant feed of material to the rotors, increasing shredding efficiency.
⦁ Size of the feed opening: Determines the maximum size of the pieces of material that can be loaded into the shredder. The size is chosen according to the dimensions of the raw material.
⦁ Motor power: Affects the throughput of the shredder and its ability to cope with hard materials.
⦁ Type of cutting elements (knives): Different shapes and configurations of knives make it possible to optimize the shredding process for specific materials.
⦁ Control and automation system: Modern shredders are equipped with control systems that monitor motor load, temperature and other parameters, ensuring safe and efficient operation. Automation of material loading and unloading also increases productivity.
The choice of a specific shredder model should be based on a careful analysis of the enterprise's needs, including the type and volume of materials processed, the required particle size and the budget. It is also important to consider the availability of service and of spare parts. Ultimately, a properly selected shredder will become a reliable and efficient tool for waste recycling and for obtaining valuable recycled raw material.
